Sadly we have had to cancel our show with artist Tran Nguyen in March due to an unforseen event. We are working on getting her back in the gallery soon!
However, we are working on something REALLY COOL to help offset the disappointment with not having Tran that month...stay tuned...

Mia Araujo's intense new painting "Requiem (For The Damaged), hours could be spent looking at all the details in this piece.

Madeline Von Foerster's new painting " Ny Alantsika (Our Forests) " Says Madeline: "This painting was inspired by Malagasy singer and songwriter Razia Said, who has become an ardent voice for forests in Madagascar, which are being burned and illegally logged at an alarming rate. Here she personifies the Rosewood tree (Dalbergia Latifolia), and appears with a few examples of the unique Malagasy fauna, which exist nowhere else on earth. Part of my proceeds from this painting will go towards Razia's Wildlife Conservation Society initiative to plant trees in Madagascar, and Roq La Rue gallerist Kirsten Anderson has also volunteered a generous contribution!"

Special Event! Alice Bag at the Roq...

Alice Bag Reading and Acoustic Performance at Roq La Rue Gallery
Friday November 4th 2011 at 7pm
Roq La Rue is extremely pleased to host a reading and acoustic performance with the legendary Alice Bag. Alice has written about growing up in the LA Punk scene, and will be doing a reading from her book "Violence Girl" as well as a book signing at the gallery on FRIDAY NOVEMBER 4TH at 7:00PM. In addition, she will duet on a few songs with special guest El Vez!! We hope you will join us for this very special event!! (Books will also be available at the gallery)
"Alice Bag was the lead singer of the Bags, the first female fronted punk band to play the Masque during the West Coast punk revolution of 1977. Violence Girl, From East LA Rage to Hollywood Stage is the story of her upbringing in East LA, her eventual migration to Hollywood and the euphoria and aftermath of the first punk wave. Violence Girl reveals how domestic abuse fueled her desire for female empowerment and sheds a new perspective on the origin of hardcore, a style most often associated with white suburban males.
The proximity of the East L.A. barrio to Hollywood is as close as a short drive on the 101 freeway, but the cultural divide is enormous. Born to Mexican-born and American-naturalized parents, Alicia Armendariz migrated a few miles west to participate in the free-range birth of the 1970s punk movement. Alicia adopted the punk name Alice Bag, and became lead singer for The Bags, early punk visionaries who starred in Penelope Spheeris’ documentary The Decline of Western Civilization.
Here is a life of many crossed boundaries, from East L.A.’s musica ranchera to Hollywood’s punk rock; from a violent male-dominated family to female-dominated transgressive rock bands. Alice’s feminist sympathies can be understood by the name of her satiric all-girl early Goth band Castration Squad. Violence Girl takes us from a violent upbringing to an aggressive punk sensibility; this time a difficult coming-of-age memoir culminates with a satisfying conclusion, complete with a happy marriage and children. Many personal photographs energize the text in remarkable ways."
Here is a trailer for the book:

Andy Kehoe Sneak Peek!

Andy Kehoe "All Turns To Brilliance"
Andy Kehoe is gearing up for his upcoming show at Roq La Rue this October entitled "Arise Feral Night". This new series focuses on the otherwordly landscapes and nature-spirit denizens that populate Kehoe's work, however this new show opens up an even deeper portal to Kehoe's world, one that contains a similar magic and enigmatic mystery as that of Hayao Miyazaki.
As Andy told us, "Since it's in October around Halloween I decided to do a series based on the coming of night to my land. I've been meaning to do a night series for a while and this seemed like an appropriate time to do it. Most of my work exists in a state of constant Autumn and constant twilight. Night does come every once in a while but it's a different kind of night. Layers between worlds, tenuous to begin with, open up and intertwine. Fade in and out. So there's a lot of thin, overlapping layers of different worlds all converging and creatures wandering in and out of these worlds."
Here is a sneak peek at a few of these wonderful works coming up for the show! Andy will be showing alongside Charlie Immer.

Derek Nobbs at Roq la Rue

Derek Nobbs "Stumptown" watercolor, gouache, gold leaf on stained paper
We are pleased to give everyone a sneak peek at an artist we have just signed up for our roster in 2012- Derek Nobbs.
Derek Nobbs draws inspiration from various sources such as antique photographs, strange ephemera, vintage taxidermy, old items lovingly used until the missing paint works with nature's rust to tell a story, and the land from the desert to the sea. From this he combines elements of design with a tightly executed scenes painted on paper stained to look as old as the inspirations he draws from.
We will have a couple of works at the gallery through June!
